Ayuh. Being a New Hampshireman myself, that saying is an old friend of mine.
Sometimes, just seeing someone break an unbreakable barrier is enough to give the rest of us a way forward. It happened for the world with Roger Bannister and the 4-minute mile, for instance, and it happened for me and many other guitarists with Paco de Lucia. Before Paco, after trying my damnedest, I didn’t think it was possible for anyone to make scales sound the way they sounded in my head.
But Yamashita? “You can’t get there from here.” Perfect. I wish I’d thought of it for the blog post. I’m stealing it… just a little.. 🙂

Kazuhito Yamashita is one of the best guitar players. Actually it is true that “You can’t get there from here.” And his speed makes me dream…But listening to Pepe also makes me dream…
All this is – instead – is Yamashita, freak-clown of the classical. Thankfully some toplevel reviews feel the same way…

Mr. Witherston: For those wanting to hear the music as it should be, would you please post a link to a suitable video? Something like this, perhaps? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6iu124sQxWM
I am a big fan of Yamashita, although I think perhaps not of everything he does is equally successful. That said, he’s one of the few guitarists who is instantly recognizable, and there is something to be said for that. Everyone may not like what he has to say, but at least he has something to say.

I think he has two modes of performing — a showbiz mode and a serious mode. I saw him on his tour with James Galway and he played his New World Symphony extravaganza. It was a circus. But when he plays seriously, wow. It’s all there.

And what is John Witherston’s legacy? The truth is no one will ever remember YOUR name.

I’d like to add a thought. In another online forum, guitarist John Marsh Bigelow said of Yamashita’s playing:
“You can’t get there from here.”

Yamashita plays so recklessly and forced. For example the playing here…
There is no trace of “La boda de Luis Alonso” the classic zarzuela by GerĂłnimo GimĂ©nez.
