Overheard at the Record Store

Customer: “Hi, I’m looking for a gift for my dad. He likes jazz – who do you recommend?”

Clerk: “Well, Louis Armstrong is pretty popular.”

Customer: “Louis Armstrong? Isn’t he the astronaut? He’s like the first guy to walk on the moon.”

Clerk: “No, no, you’re thinking Neil.”

Customer: “Fine, whatever, the first guy to kneel on the moon.”

Sor on Gut Strings

Rob MacKillop here is playing Sor on gut strings, with no nails, on a Panormo (copy) guitar, with the guitar resting on a table in front of him. Rob says:

These pages will document my attempt to perform the music of Fernando Sor with the techniques and interpretive practices outlined in his musical scores and tutors.”

Beautifully done!

I checked it out, not expecting much, and found something beautiful:

Old Guys Playing Guitar

I’ve been noticing some older guys with guitars showing up on YouTube lately. Here’s Ken Speers (69) playing some pretty cool (if you ask me) fingerstyle jazz (When You Wish Upon a Star) with some pretty slick artificial harmonics:

And then again with Lady Be Good:

I think it’s time to start an “Old Guys” category!
